Why Do We DNA Test?
At Loveable Oodles, we prioritize meticulous care in the selection and planning of our future breeding pairs.
In addition to dedicating ample time and effort to the well-being of our beloved dogs, we ensure that ALL our dogs undergo DNA testing for genetic health risks associated with breeding (whether these risks are known or not at the time).
Each of our magnificent dogs undergoes temperament testing, genetic screening through DNA testing, and regular health check-ups before being considered for breeding. Why test?
Hereditary disease tests allow for accurate diagnosis of disease status of dogs (clear, carrier or affected). There are several good reasons to test any breeding stock for genetic disease. For one were improving the health and future viability of this wonderful breed, but above all its the peace of mind knowing your new family member will NOT exhibit disease symptoms associated with these breed hereditary diseases. There are three possible results for DNA testing: • Clear: The disease-causing gene is not present, so the dog cannot pass on a disease gene to its progeny.
• Carrier:A carrier of the pair of chromosomes responsible for whether or not the dog is affected, one is disease-causing and one is not. In this instance the dog is a ‘carrier’ It is important to note here that a puppy that is a carrier will NOT exhibit disease symptoms or have DNA associated genetic medical problems as a result. • Affected:Both of the genes are the disease-causing variant and the dog will be medically affected by the disease, as well as passing on a disease-causing gene to its offspring. Our Orivet DNA tests screen for the following genetic diseases: Toy Poodle:
DISEASES:Degenerative MyelopathyGangliosidosis GM2 (Poodle Type)Mucopolysaccharidosis VI (Poodle Type)Progressive Rod Cone Degeneration (prcd) - PRAVon Willebrand's Disease Type I
